True West and Plays as a Genre

We recently watched True West. Although we haven't finished the whole play, I've found it really interesting for two reasons: 1) it's just an intense and intriguing story and 2) it was written as a play. I never had really encountered a play as a text before, and although we aren't actually reading it, I'm curious about the genre.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has ever read a play (other than Shakespeare and Fences) before. What is your favorite one? This quarter I've come into contact with graphic novels for the first time and learned its advantages, so I guess I'd like to explore drama as well. Any comments would be appreciated (including recommendations).

  1. I, like you, haven't ever read a play in text form, but i'm sure a good amount of movies i've seen started out as plays or playwrites. I'm interested in discovering how the text in Fences will flow--like how narration and scripts are converted into a read rather than being seen as a presentation.

  2. I'm really enjoying True West. For some reason I think its a good medium for comdey because the acting has to be so real. True West works because its a movie, but I'm unsure how Fences will turn out seeing that we're reading a script. I've already had difficulties interpreting tones and humor. Hopefully things will clear up as the plot and characters develop.

  3. I haven't really read any sort of play besides Shakespeare and Fences, but I don't really like the genre. I think that books written to be book tell a much better story than the plays. There are much better descriptions, and you can get more involved in books. Although I think this, I also think that it is a good experience to be exposed to other kinds of literature.
